Dr. Husman answers a few key FAQs below:
Do you take insurance?
- Yes, I am in network with Blue Cross. The only Blue Cross network I am out of network with is UnityPoint, as they have their own network. I charge the reduced in-network rate for those who are not in network with Blue Cross, so you would pay the same as those with Blue Cross with a high deductible plan.
Do you offer telehealth?
- Yes, but it is ideal to have your first appointment in person for a list of reasons, including connection and rapport, checking vitals, and if controlled substances are prescribed this is essential.
Do you see children still?
- Yes, I still see children.
Do you only work with psychedelics (clinical ketamine and Spravato)?
- No, I also work with people who do not have treatment-resistant conditions, or where these treatments are not needed or desired by the patient.
Do you prescribe home-use ketamine?
- No, I do not provide prescriptions for any home use of compounded racemic ketamine products, such as lozenges, troches, or nasal spray. I only provide this treatment in the office, as with Spravato.
You do a lot of work with spirituality on your coaching and wellness site and with people having spiritual issues. What if I am an atheist and don’t believe in spirits? Do you work with people who aren’t spiritual?
- Yes, I certainly work with people of a wide variety of faith and no faith backgrounds. I am not here to convince you that a change in your faith or belief system is necessary for your psychiatric well-being.
What do you think is the most important thing that is being missed in the mental health world?
- That is easy. Stress is poison. It is a metabolic toxin. It is pro-aging. It is pro-inflammatory, the opposite of our highly anti-inflammatory (love them or hate them) antidepressant/antianxiety medications. You can’t improve sleep without addressing stress. You can’t improve mood and anxiety without addressing stress. There may be other variables that must be addressed, too, but stress has to be mitigated. There are ways without stopping the world.
What if I want to see you, but I don’t want or need to take medication? Is that ok?
- Yes, I work with some patients who see me for psychotherapy and are keenly interested in creating their own lasting change on their terms.
If I have seen you in your coaching and wellness practice, can I see you in your psychiatric practice (or vice versa)?
- No, these are kept entirely separate, but if you need a referral for the other type of services, I am happy to provide you with names of practitioners I know and trust.
What does Integrative Psychiatry actually mean? Is it just marketing?
- That is a great question! As a board certified psychiatrist who is also board certified in functional medicine, working with the matrix (sleep, stress, lifestyle, diet, community connection, and targeted supplementation) as a part of your journey is important. There is research to guide this work, it is not just blast you with high dose vitamin D forever (because too much can be a bad thing), or that more fish oil will offset your high stress sedentary job. We work together to support you the ways we can in the medical model I practice in.
